Mayor opens Mobility and Lifestyle ‘flagship’ support centre

The Mayor of Tamworth, Cllr John Garner, has officially opened a new flagship support centre catering for the needs of disabled people in the heart of Tamworth.

The Mobility and Lifestyle store, which has been situated in the Tamworth Co-op department store for the past four years, now occupies a far bigger single level unit on the ground floor.

The move follows huge demand for Mobility and Lifestyle’s services and it is now the only centre of its type in Staffordshire to become officially accredited for the government’s Motability Scheme.

The scheme allows disabled people to lease scooters or powered wheelchairs by using their government-funded mobility allowance.

Richard Smith, co-founder of Mobility and Lifestyle, says the new facility will not just serve the people of Tamworth, but for the entire county.

“We have a total of eight outlets serving more than 30,000 customers. This large unit will not only enable us to stock a huge range of scooters, wheelchairs and walking aids, it will also provide our highly trained engineers with much needed extra service space.

“We have a team of eight people dedicated to carrying out repairs to scooters and wheelchairs on site, and they provide a full breakdown and recovery service. In addition, they also conduct a wide range of home care installations in people’s homes. “

He added: “We’ve enjoyed an excellent relationship with the Tamworth Co-op and are very grateful to them for offering us this prime retail space. We’re very proud to be in a position to offer such comprehensive support to disabled people. We think this will be of great use to people across Staffordshire, but it will of course be particularly convenient for Tamworth residents.”

Julian Coles, chief executive of the Tamworth Co-operative Society, attended the opening of the new-look store along with several other senior managers.

“It’s clear that Mobility and Lifestyle has established a much needed centre for disabled people in Tamworth and Staffordshire in general,” he said.

“We are delighted that their move to Tamworth has been so successful. It’s clear that they have a modern and energetic approach to providing a first class service for disabled people. We hope the extra space they now enjoy will help them to offer even greater support to people in need of their services.

“We always try to work very closely with our concession partners to help them meet the changing needs of their customers. Our relationship with Mobility and Lifestyle is an excellent example of that. We wish them the very best for the future and will continue to support them as much as possible.”
