Fashion concession closure will pave way for new-look Tamworth Co-op department store

Tamworth Co-operative Society has announced that the M&Co fashion concession within its town centre department store is to close in late April.

A huge clearance sale of men’s, women’s and children’s wear, as well as accessories, will start on Friday, March 13.

Store administration manager Philip White said that, while it is disappointing to lose the retailer, this paves the way for exciting new developments for local shoppers.

“I would like to thank M&Co and their staff for their commitment and support throughout their time with us,” he said.

“We have been putting considerable thought into how we should best use the space that will be freed up. We view this as an opportunity to improve our offering and have been consulting with experts in the retail business and the local council as to the best way forward. Most importantly we have been listening to our customers.

“On the back of the popular Julian Charles bedding department, plans are now well underway to bring in a bigger and better home offering, including gifts, household textiles and associated products, making us the ‘go-to destination’ for both home and fashion.”

Tamworth Co-op chief executive Julian Coles said the Society is looking forward to implementing its plans for the building in Colehill:

“The department store has been the most challenging part of our operation in recent years. Its financial performance has contrasted sharply with the vibrant food and funeral divisions.

“However, despite turbulent market forces, changing shopping habits and competition from Ventura Park, our aim is to give our customers the best possible shopping experience in the heart of the town. We hope they will be pleased with what we are planning and will continue to support us.”

In addition to the M&Co sale, the existing brands in the store, including Dorothy Perkins, Quiz, Burton, Roman and Klass, will be taking advantage of the anticipated increase in footfall and also offering discounts during the sale period.

Tamworth Co-op is expected to unveil its revamped department store in May.
